The foam is removed to make way for the insert. The glass and foam are ground down until the insert fits flush with the surrounding surface.
Once every thing looks good the corebond putty is troweled onto the insert, the foam on the coaming is primed with some hot ortho resin then they're all pressed together, taking care to maintain the alignment with the existing laminate. Now the seam is ground down to allow a "tie" lamination between the two parts.
The full laminate is removed right at the seam between the insert and the coaming. This grinding tapers to nothing about 4 inches into the coaming and only 2 inches into the insert. The lamination will be equal to the original laminate on top of the foam. This will ensure a structural tie between the two parts.
